Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can be part of the face lift or could be a separate operation, should only the eyelids show signs of relaxation. Eyelid surgery solves the problem of the eyelids relaxation, removes the bags, lifts 1 – 2 mm the outer palpebral commissure and gives a youthful tone to the appearance. The wrinkles round the eyes (goose leg) are not fully treated with eyelid surgery. Fall of the eyebrows is also not treated, unless it is combined with forehead lift. The need for a eyelid surgery does not depend on the age, but on the problems the eyelids might bear. Thus, a person of a younger age could have bags under his eyes, which might need eyelid surgery. With this procedure the bags are removed forever, however, the relaxation of the eyelids continues, although at a slower pace.

In eyelid surgery, the incisions for the upper eyelid can be located within the ciliary ripple, for the bottom eyelid in the edges of the bottom eyelashes row. Those incisions leave almost never scars and disappear soon, depending on the patient. The only case that there is no incision there, is when the patient has intense bags from the projected extrabulbar fat in his bottom eyelid. In this case the incision is located in the inner side of the bottom eyelid through the mucous gland.

The eyelid surgery can be made with topical anesthesia, yet it is advised to the anaesthesiologist to provide the patient a sense of drunkenness, so that the surgeon could perform easier. Thus, the patient comes to the surgery for a short procedure foodless and not having drunk water for the past 6 hours. Two – three hours after the surgery the patient can go home, having some band aid on his incisions and his bruised eyes. When waking from the operation he has limited sight due to the ophthalmic paste that is applied during the operation. That feeling fades away in 2 - 3 hours. There is no pain reported from the patients. There is a rare possibility of conjunctivitis, but can be effectively treated with eye-drops.

If the patient had a forehead lift as well the eyelids cannot fully shut at night. The patient could apply pads with cool chamomile and eye-drops three times per day. The stitches and the tapes are removed the 4th day. The bruises disappear within the week, unless a hematoma delays the healing for a few days more. The incisions in eyelid surgery are not discernible after a while. Hydrating cremes amend and preserve the results. Avoiding the sun is obligatory. Most patients return to their jobs on the 4th day, when the stitches are removed, while others go out on the 2nd day, wearing sun-glasses.

A newer and more advanced technique has beed developed during the operation. This technique comprises to a kind of a limited subperiosteal face lift of the middle area of the face and to the use of special stitches. This technique aims to enhance the zygomatics and soften the rhino-lip wrinkles. This technique does not substitute the classic one and tends to be part of the first operation.
